10 Things You Should Know About Thomas Rhett

Thomas Rhett quickly became a country fan favorite when his first album, It Goes Like This, was released in 2013. The artist is currently on his Suits and Boots tour with Brett Eldridge (check out tour destinations and tickets here), so here are a few things you should know about the singer before you go out and score tickets.

  1. Thomas Rhett is the son of country artist Rhett Akins. Sometimes Thomas’ dad would bring him out to play the drums during an encore, and one time he came onstage and rapped to the song “Gettin’ Jiggy With It”.

  2. In middle school, Thomas was part of a pop-rock band called the High Heeled Flip Flops. They all dyed their hair black and the lead singer sang in a British punk accent.

  3. Thomas grew up with a first-hand look into the music business, and it didn’t make him want to follow in his father’s footsteps; in fact, after his parents got divorced when Thomas was nine, he all but promised his mom he’d never get into the music business.

  4. He went to Lipscomb Tennessee, where he changed his major from kinesiology to business to communications. Just for fun, Thomas formed a cover band that would play at frat parties and other gigs. His dad urged him to pursue music.

  5. After opening for a Nashville showcase, Thomas was quickly signed by the exact publisher who signed his dad’s first deal, EMI Music’s Ben Vaughn.

  6. Thomas married his wife, Lauren, in 2012, when he was just 22 years old. The two had known each other since first grade. Thomas said most people told him he was too young to get married, except for Luke Bryan, who said, “Buddy, if you’re in love and you want to get married, then do it.”

  7. He was adamant with his record label on this ground rule: He won’t get up close and personal with the women cast in his music videos. Except for the video to Die A Happy Man, which stars none other than his wife Lauren.
  8. Thomas has co-written hits for Jason Aldean, Lee Brice, Scotty McCreery and Florida Georgia Line.

  10. Thomas Rhett’s new album, Tangled Up, features two unexpected guests: American Idol star Jordin Sparks and rapper Lunchmoney Lewis. Thomas is frequently cited as mixing up the country music genre. He calls the new record “Country mixed with a lot of things that I grew up listening to.”
